Midterm
Study Guide
The oral midterm will cover lecture 1-8 and lecture 9a only (not 9b).
- If you are short on time, do the following:
- practice exam. Practice talking out loud (or in your head) to the mirror or another person as you explain your steps.
- Questions and answers from Monday and Wednesday Review Session + additional questions
- Definition question: A matrix is called the inverse of a matrix M if …
- Definition question: A vector is called an eigenvector of a matrix M if … A number is called an eigenvalue of a matrix M if … Can an eigenvector be the zero vector? Can an eigenvalue be 0?
- Fact questions: If det(B)=0, then determine whether B is invertible. If det(B) is zero, what is the rank of B?
- Fact questions: If det(B)=-20, then determine whether B is invertible. If det(B)=-20, what is the rank of B?
- Make a physical cheat sheet! You won’t have time to find things in your electronic lecture notes during the exam.
- Review old questions: List of past questions (when you save each answer, Gradescope will tell you whether your answer is correct/incorrect).
- Review solutions to the past three worksheets posted on the Modules page.
- In case you are unable to answer most of the questions, you will have the opportunity to earn partial credit by demonstrating what you have learned. Prepare a brief explanation about what you have learned from the topics listed in the practice exam. You can include this in your cheat sheet.
Schedule a midterm slot during October 7 and 16 (Wed to Fri) or a late day in October or November
Book one slot for the actual exam on calendly.com/egunawan/midterm. If you accidentally book multiple slots, I will keep last booking you make (and delete the other bookings).
You can reschedule via Calendly or by sending me a message.
Materials to bring to the exam
- Working webcam and microphone
- Black/blue pens or dark pencils ; or a stylus if you have a tablet; or a marker if you have a physical whiteboard
- Sheets of white paper, not graph paper; or a tablet if you have one; or a physical whiteboard
- Optional: a calculator, a cheat sheet
Structure of the midterm
The exam will be from N:00 to N:20 or N:30 to N:50, depending on when you sign up.
I will read and show you a list of problems (almost identical to the practice exam) one at a time.
I will ask you to perform a sanity check for one of these problems.
If you make an arithmetic mistake during a computation, I will say something so that you can fix it (my hint will not affect your score).
If you have trouble getting started on a question, I will give you hints (small hints will not affect your score).
If you are still unable to answer that question, I will continue with the rest of the questions then come back to that question at the end.
If you are still unable to answer the question, I will ask you other questions so that you can earn partial credit.
(I hope this won’t be needed) If you are unprepared and unable to answer most of the questions, you will have the opportunity to earn some partial credit by demonstrating a few concepts you have learned. Prepare a brief explanation about what you have learned from the topics listed in the practice exam. You should include this in your cheat sheet.
During the midterm
In order to take this midterm, you must be present on Zoom, with a camera on.
- You can bring a calculator, although you probably don’t need it
- Recommended: have a one large cheat sheet (but with the content of an index card)
- You can have the textbook and notes open, but it would be more time-efficient to create a cheat sheet instead.
- No internet/technology (except for Zoom and using the calculator)
- No communicating with anyone during the Zoom meeting
In case you need to submit a regrade request later, the meeting will be recorded. The recording will be deleted after the semester is over.
