Masking in the classroom

For the first two weeks of the Spring 2022 semester (through January 31) masking will be required in all classroom settings. Beginning February 1, the Norman campus will revert to the Fall 2021 masking guidance that requires masking during the two-week quarantine period in classrooms with a confirmed positive COVID-19 case. For more information, visit the OU Masking Protocols page.

Course details

This course on introductory linear algebra will be taught in a flipped setting. Short lecture videos (and PDF notes) by the instructor will be posted roughly three times a week. You are expected to either watch the video or read the lecture notes (or both) before coming to class.

Textbook

The lectures will very loosely follow a free online textbook. Both the textbook and the Partial Student Solution Manual can be downloaded here: Linear Algebra with Applications, by W. Keith Nicholson

Note that the book has extensive sections of examples, applications, and additional topics, so we will skip much of the material.

Lecture videos and lecture notes

Reading homework

For each lecture video, there will be one short ‘quick check’ homework assignment to check your understanding. If you wish to earn full credit on these, you are welcome to ask the instructor to verify your answers before class or during a drop-in office hour.

A reading hw can be resubmitted as many times as you want until the deadline. Let me know if you have technical difficulty with a resubmission.

Worksheets

The worksheet problems are to be started during class (with the help of the instructor and classmates) and finished outside of class. Do the worksheets on paper or a tablet, and upload to LA Gradescope. Some problems will be graded by correctness and the rest by completion.

A worksheet can be resubmitted as many times as you want until the deadline. Let me know if you have technical difficulty with a resubmission.

Group presentations on linear algebra applications

The suggested topics will be on applications of linear algebra to the natural and social sciences or more advanced topics in linear algebra. Details to be posted.

In-class quizzes

Timed quizzes will be given during class, roughly every other non-exam week. No calculators are needed/allowed (which means you do not need to simplify your numerical answers arithmetically).

The first quiz will be a practice quiz. It will be graded, but everyone who attempts the quiz will receive full credit on the grade book.

Exams

There will be two in-class midterm exams on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 and Wednesday, April 20, 2022.

The final exam time has been scheduled by the university, see One.

No calculators are needed/allowed on midterms and the final exam (which means you do not need to simplify your numerical answers arithmetically).

Course Policies

Communication

In addition to being available before/after class and during office hours, I am happy to answer other questions by Canvas Inbox or email, which I typically check several times during 8am-5pm M-F.

Class participation

You are strongly encouraged to participate during class, but there is no penalty for not participating. I will take roll the first week of classes and a few more times during the semester, however this is not part of your grade.

OU Spring 2022 attendance policy

Missing a class session due to illness or isolation will not result in a penalty for the absence, and the student will not be asked to provide formal documentation from a healthcare provider to excuse the absence. This policy is based on all students and faculty adhering to the principles of integrity, honesty, and concern for others.

Students who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, including cough, fever, shortness of breath, muscle pain, headache, chills, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, or diarrhea or who have been in close contact with others who have symptoms should:

  • Remain at home to protect others
  • Ensure that any needed screening has been conducted (COVID-19 Screening and Reporting Tool) and any needed treatment obtained
  • Contact the instructor prior to absence or inability to participate, if possible, and provide an honest report of the reason for which you cannot attend class or complete a course activity
  • Complete coursework and submit assignments electronically to the extent possible and as directed by the instructor
  • Communicate with the instructor to arrange modifications to deadlines or work requirements, when necessary

For more information, see ou.edu/together/instructional-faculty/attendance

Flexibility for students missing assignments or quizzes

Some students may be participating in Provost approved/ Director of Athletics approved/ legally required activities, need to travel for other reasons, or get sick during the semester. To accommodate these, 20 % (rounded up) of your lowest scores in reading hw, worksheets, and quizzes will automatically be dropped — no documentation is needed.

Recording

Class sessions of this course will not be recorded, with the exception of emergency situations. If and when they are, students may not share any course recordings online or with individuals not enrolled in the class.

Academic Dishonesty

Academic dishonesty will result in an academic misconduct report and a failure in Math 3333. For more information, see University Academic Policies below.

Reasonable Accommodation for Disabilities

The University of Oklahoma is committed to providing reasonable accommodation for all students with disabilities. Students with disabilities who require accommodations in this course should contact their professor as early in the semester as possible.

If you have a disability that may prevent the full demonstration of your abilities in this course, please contact me (the instructor) personally as soon as possible so I can provide an appropriate contact to discuss accommodations necessary to ensure full participation.

Students with disabilities must be registered with the Disability Resource Center prior to receiving accommodations in this course.

If you have a disability and you would like to make a request for reasonable accommodation, please get in touch with the Accessibility and Disability Resource Center. The Disability Resource Center is located in the University Community Center, 730 College Ave, phone 405-325-3852 or TDD: 405-325-4173.

Academic misconduct

Cheating is strictly prohibited at OU. It is the instructor’s professional obligation to report academic misconduct to the Office of Academic Integrity Programs. Sanctions for academic misconduct can include expulsion from the University and an F in this course.

It is your responsibility to know and follow the rules set by the instructor. For more details on the University’s policies concerning academic misconduct consult the link: ou.edu/integrity/students.

This link also has information about admonitions (essentially warnings about potential misconduct for fairly minor infractions) and your rights to appeal charges of academic misconduct.

Exams and quizzes

You may not give or receive help on exams and quizzes. Calculators are not needed/allowed.

Homework and projects

You are encouraged to work with the instructor, group members, and math center tutors on homework and projects, but you must write up the solutions on your own. Having another person complete your homework or copying solutions from the internet (or offline sources) is also an academic misconduct.

For more information about plagiarism, watch this video and take this short course offered by University Libraries.

Religious Holidays

It is the policy of the University to excuse absences of students that result from religious observances and to provide for the rescheduling of required classwork that may fall on religious holidays without penalty. It is the responsibility of the student to make alternate arrangements with the instructor at least one week prior to the actual date of the religious holiday.

Should you need modifications or adjustments to your course requirements because of documented pregnancy-related or childbirth-related issues, please contact me as soon as possible to discuss your options. Generally, modifications will be made where medically necessary and similar in scope to accommodations based on temporary disability.  Learn more about the rights of pregnant and parenting students by consulting the FAQ sheets provided by the Institutional Equity Office.

Title IX Resources

For any concerns regarding gender-based discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, stalking, or intimate partner violence, the University offers a variety of resources, including advocates on-call 24/7, counseling services, mutual no contact orders, scheduling adjustments, and disciplinary sanctions against the perpetrator. Please contact the Sexual Misconduct Office at 405-325-2215 (8-5, M-F) or OU Advocates at 405-615-0013 (24/7) to learn more or to report an incident.

Land Acknowledgement Statement

Long before the University of Oklahoma was established, the land on which the University now resides was the traditional home of the “Hasinais” Caddo Nation and “Kirikirʔi:s” Wichita & Affiliated Tribes. We acknowledge this territory once also served as a hunting ground, trade exchange point, and migration route for the Apache, Comanche, Kiowa and Osage nations. Today, 39 tribal nations dwell in the state of Oklahoma as a result of settler and colonial policies that were designed to assimilate Native people. The University of Oklahoma recognizes the historical connection our university has with its indigenous community. We acknowledge, honor and respect the diverse Indigenous peoples connected to this land. We fully recognize, support and advocate for the sovereign rights of all of Oklahoma’s 39 tribal nations. This acknowledgement is aligned with our university’s core value of creating a diverse and inclusive community. It is an institutional responsibility to recognize and acknowledge the people, culture and history that make up our entire OU Community.
